Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Early Wisdom Tooth Removal Prevents Future Dental Problems

Dental anxiety is a common issue. Many individuals who suffer from dental anxiety feel nervous, panicked, or anxious at the thought of visiting the dentist. Fortunately, Dr. Eugene Morris and Dr. Armando Gama at Oral Surgical Associates in Missoula, MT, offer nitrous oxide sedation which can induce feelings of calm and relaxation. As a result, patients can feel more comfortable and receive the dental treatments they need.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide Sedation

For some patients, dental anxiety is so severe that they avoid dental visits altogether. Nitrous oxide can play a major role in helping these patients achieve their oral health goals. One of the most significant benefits of nitrous oxide is that the dosage can be adjusted throughout the procedure, keeping patients at a comfortable level of sedation. Furthermore, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a nosepiece, making it a good option for those who have a fear of needles. The effects of nitrous oxide can be felt within minutes, and they wear off just as quickly. As a result, patients who choose this sedation option can drive themselves to and from our office.

Do I Qualify for Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide sedation is typically safe and effective for patients of all ages. This sedation option may be right for you if you have:

  • Anxiety or fear about dental procedures

  • Tooth sensitivity

  • Multiple or complex dental issues

  • Immunity or slowed reaction to anesthetics

  • A previous unpleasant dental experience

  • A fear of needles

  • Difficulty controlling movement

There are some instances in which nitrous oxide sedation is not recommended. For example, if you have a history of emphysema, asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), middle ear infections, or congestive heart failure, this sedation option may not be right for you. Additionally, nitrous oxide is not recommended for pregnant women in their first trimester or those with nasal congestion the day of their appointment.

How Nitrous Oxide Works

When you arrive for your dental visit, nitrous oxide is administered prior to your procedure. A small mask will be placed over your nose, and you will be instructed to breathe normally. Within three to five minutes, most patients begin feeling the effects of the gas, which may include a feeling of heaviness or tingling in the fingers and toes. In addition to the nitrous oxide, local anesthesia is also administered for comfort.

Nitrous oxide sedation can play a major role in helping anxious patients achieve their oral health goals.

During the procedure, patients who choose nitrous oxide remain calm and relaxed but are still aware of their surroundings. As a result, they can respond to questions or instructions given by the dental team. Once the procedure is complete, the doctor administers pure oxygen. This flushes the sedative out of the system. Consequently, patients become more alert within minutes.
