Candidates for Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic surgery is also known as corrective jaw surgery, although it actually refers to different kinds of corrective jaw surgery procedures that can be used to treat a variety of different issues. It is often carried out in conjunction with orthodontic treatment that involves wearing braces to correct the position of the teeth too, although this is not always the case. Where it is, orthognathic surgery forms the final stage in the orthodontic treatment process.

As with any surgical procedure, every patient should undergo a consultation before they have their operation. There are two main reasons for this. The first is to ensure that the patient is fully informed about what the procedure involves and answer any questions that they may have. Secondly, it is to make sure that the patient is a good candidate for the surgery itself.

So, what makes someone a good candidate for orthognathic surgery?

Problems That Can be Treated Using Orthognathic Surgery

Patients who are good candidates for orthognathic surgery typically suffer from one or more of the following problems:

  • Bruxism, which is characterized by the clenching and grinding of the teeth, normally subconsciously or unconsciously.

  • TMJ disorders, which are when a patient has an issue with the temporomandibular joint that connects the jaw to the skull.

  • Sleep apnea, a condition whereby the patient experiences interruptions in regular breathing through the night.

  • Speech impediments.

  • Chewing problems.

  • Issues with the shape, protrusion of the jaw.

Good Physical and Emotional Health

The best candidates for orthognathic surgery are those who are in generally good health and who have realistic expectations about the surgery itself and what can be achieved through it. Orthognathic surgery can change your appearance and ease or resolve many issues, but it won’t transform your entire life.

A Commitment to Following Aftercare Instructions

As with all surgeries, what you do in the hours, days, and weeks following your surgery can have a huge impact on whether or not you experience complications and the overall success of your procedure. Your oral surgeon will explain to you what you can expect during the recovery stage at your consultation, and you will also be given a list of post-operative instructions that you must follow to reduce your chances of adverse side effects and complications. Your surgeon will want to be satisfied that you understand these and are committed to following the instructions that you are given.

Other Less Invasive Treatment Options Have Been Unsuccessful

No good surgeon will put a patient through surgery unnecessarily, and in most cases, it is always only ever the last course of action. You could be a good candidate for orthognathic surgery if you have tried less invasive treatment options, but they have proven to be unsuccessful. Only at this stage will you then be considered for a surgical procedure.
